Multiproxy Climate Reconstruction
Climate proxies (e.g. tree rings, ice cores, coral isotope records) can be used to
reconstruction past climate via covariance based methods that use the covariance
information from a calibration interval, in which proxy data and instrumental data
overlap, to reconstruction climate during periods in which proxies are available.
(see Mann et al., 1998 for detail).
The figure below (preliminary) shows Northern Hemisphere mean temperature reconstructed from 1400 to 1856 (when the instrumntal data begin. Red is the Mann et al., 1998 reconstruction, blue is a reconstruction based on the same proxy data as Mann et al., but using a different covariance method created by Tapio Schneider and green is a reconstruction using a tree ring database
